Bloom Where You Are Planted

IMG_1313List: What I Like about Where I Live

Next week, people will make resolutions about how they’d like to change their lives in the new year.

But, by late January, most of those good intentions will fizzle (witness your local gym).

Wouldn’t it be a better effort to change our attitude about the things in our life that we CAN’T change?

Remember the Serenity Prayer?

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And wisdom to know the difference.

I’ve noticed that most people are not happy with where they live.  They wish their city apartments were country homes. They long to leave the country for the seashore. Their houses are too big or too small. Their yards are not growing or in need of mowing. They must drive an hour to reach a store, or they hate the congestion that new local super mall brought with it. Even little things can get them down – the relatives are too far away…or too doggone close…

If you have a wanderlust for a different situation, then perhaps an attitude change will help you too.

Above my desk:  “Bloom. Where. You. Are. Planted.”

It’s no secret that when the decision was made to move to Georgia, I dragged my feet.  My back-and-forth with Just My Joe on the topic was much akin to the Green Acres theme song (you can see our particular exchange below).

But, in the end, it was the perfect decision and I thank him for it. I still feel down at times, like a fish out of water, placed into an area where friendships are old and long-established, but I’m finding new beauty here every day.

So, my friend, don your magical see-things-differently glasses, and list what you like about where you live. Download your list template here: Template-What I Like About Where I Live

Finally: My Exchange with Just My Joe: Sung to the tune of the Green Acres TV show theme song. First, a refresher of that song, then my revised lyrics below it:

(Hubbie)

South Georgia is the place to be

Farm livin’ is the life for me.

Land spreadin’ out so flat and wide

Keep congestion, just give me that countryside.

(Me)

D.C. still gives me a tug.

I’m allergic to all those bugs.

I just adore a mountain view.

Dah-ling I love you but alligators belong in stew.

(Both)

 Sun’s pleasin’.

 …No seasons!

 Fresh air.

 …Hot down there!

Sweet tea and grits.

…Served at the Ritz?!

You are my wife.

Good bye mid-Atlantic life.

South Georgia we are there!

Have a blessed, prosperous, safe New Year!
