A Few of My Favorite “Things”

IMG_1347List: Best Purchases I Ever Made

Seems like January is the month of sales.

“All Christmas inventory must go!”

At least, that’s what the stores tell us. Do they think we don’t notice that prices:

  • are often marked up before they’re marked down?
  • are not that much better  than December (Witness: A sale before Christmas announced, “20% off sale prices”…after Christmas, that same retailer advertised “25% off original price.”  Best to do the math before you buy).

Creating this list has been eye-opening for me, as I hope all your lists are for you.

I discovered that the best “things” I own came to me in the form of gifts from other people.

And, the best things I have ever purchased were gifts for others – my mother daily wore a turquoise cross I brought her from Arizona, and my dad still uses (every day!) the little weather radio I got him about 28 years ago.

I also realized how few of my “things” are all that special to me.  It makes me want to shop more purposefully going forward.

Included on my list:

My Volvo. I once had a police officer tell me that he’s never unbuckled a dead man from a Volvo. Now, that’s not to say that you won’t die in a Volvo just as quickly as any other vehicle, it just means that they might have an extra measure of safety that works in your favor.

My iPhone and insurance. How did I live without an iPhone for so long?! After pulling it out of my dog’s mouth twice, I purchased insurance on it.

My talking photo frame.  Remember those?  Mine is the one item I would grab if the house were burning down.  It features my son’s eight-year-old voice telling me I’m the best mommy in the universe. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Nuvi GPS. Without it, I’d still be circling around downtown Washington D.C. trying to find the beltway. (No, I’m not exaggerating.)

A moose bell.  It actually belongs to my son.  We purchased it on a vacation in Maine.  In my mid-Atlantic house, it hung in the back yard, overlooked and almost forgotten. But, now in the South, it proudly hangs in front of our house and I love it. Each time I look at it, I think of the fun I had in Maine with both my hubbie and my son.

There are other items on my list that hold personal meaning, from writing workshops to a particular Bible translation I bought a few years ago.  Aren’t the best “things” always of a sentimental nature?

What about you? What’s the best purchase you ever made?

It sounds so materialistic, but my iPhone is definitely on my list–and laptop. Couldn’t live/work/play without them. Also love my hot pink sneakers. They’re the ones I always wanted as a kid.
